Inis Úll – Apple Isle Grove, ADF cordially invites you to our 2015 Summer Solstice High Day celebration: A Reckoning of Truth for Manannán mac Lir. The ritual will take place on Sunday, June 21st at 3pm on the Great Hill in Central Park.
The Great God, Manannán mac Lir, has aided our grove from the beginning, serving as Gatekeeper at our very first ritual and at many more over the years. During our Lughnasadh celebration last year, Manannán asked us to hold a rite in his honor, in which he would play the central role. We gladly agreed, pledging to hold such a rite within one turn of the Wheel. This Summer Solstice, we shall fulfill that pledge.
On the Isle of Man, rent was paid to Manannán mac Lir for the use of the island and for his protection. The Manx would make this offering on the Summer Solstice. Indeed, it is proper for us to pay him tribute for the use of our grove’s Nemeton in this and in all the Worlds as he so often guards and wards the Gates which allow us to safely gather and worship on our own “Apple Isle”.
But our work with Manannán does not end there. One of the many gates that he oversees is that of Truth: in the lore, Manannán possessed a magical chalice that shatters whenever three lies are told over it, and mends seemlessly when three truths are spoken over the remains. As part of our tribute to him, we will become his allies in this work. First, we shall expose lies that have been told to us, that have had a negative impact upon us and the world. One example of this sort of deception is the lie that “homosexuality is sinful”. We will speak these lies over an origami cup which will be broken (unfolded) as a result. Once the lies have been exposed and rejected, we will speak powerful truths over the cup and it shall be repaired (refolded). All are invited to participate in this work. What lies have been used to demean you and those you love? What truths have you wanted to sing to the world, but have held back because of fear or shame? Exposing those lies and exalting those truths will help Manannán bring healing and empowerment to the world and to ourselves as individuals.
This Gael Hearth Culture rite will follow the ADF Core Order of Ritual. All folk of good will are welcome to attend!
Please bring offerings for Manannán mac Lir and any of the great Gael Kindreds. Part of the traditional Manx rent included yellow flowers; and so we ask all who come to consider bringing such flowers along with other offerings for Manannán. Apples, too, would be potently symbolic sacrifices. Food and drink and songs and poems and beautiful things are all appropriate gifts to give at this time.
IMPORTANT: Please note that any alcoholic offerings MUST be in containers which disguise their real identity. We are exercising our religious rights, but it is best to avoid troubles with the authorities!
We will be asking for donations to help cover our Grove’s costs. Five or ten dollars would help us out greatly – whatever you feel comfortable giving. Your participation is far more valuable than cash.
Someone will guide people who don’t know where our ritual site is from the benches south of the restrooms at the top of the Great Hill in Central Park (this is on the *northwest* part of the hill, across from where we hold our rites). To get there, enter the park via “Strangers Gate” at 106th Street and Central Park West, climb the stairs and, when you get to the top, you’ll see the benches to your left (north) between where you are and the restrooms. For this reason, it is extremely helpful if you let us know you are coming! If you are late: from the restrooms, walk east across the top of the hill – hopefully, the Fairies may lead you to us!
